Happy National Bicarbonate of Soda Day or Baking Soda Day!!!

Celebrated every December 30th, Baking Soda Day, celebrates the many uses of Bicarbonate of Soda.
Although most people only think of Bicarbonate of Soda as an ingredient when cooking it actually has many other uses.


Here are some of the more popular uses for Baking soda:

  • Great for baking of course
  • Removes odor in your cat litter box
  • Removes odor in your fridge, vents, closets, etc
  • Removed vomit odor from my car carpet (yuck it was disgusting!!!!) I washed the carpet, then dried it with a hair dryer, then packed on the baking soda, left it untouched for a day then vacuumed it...voila odor was totally gone.
  • Can be used as a meat tenderizer
  • Can also be used as a cleaning agent
  • You can polish silverware with it
  • Great to remove burned food from you pots
  • It is used in fire extinguishers for grease and oil fires
  • Relieves stomach indigestion and heartburn when mixed with water
  • A paste of baking soda will remove red sauce stains from plastic
  • Keep rubber gloves dry by sprinkling baking soda inside them (they'll smell good too)
  • A thin paste of baking soda on a damp cloth will removes bugs and tar from cars without damaging the paint (make sure to rinse clean)
  • Kills roaches when they eat the baking soda it dehydrates them and then die so place baking soda around your sink-pipe openings and along basement windows because it also will keep carpenter ants and silver fish away.
  • Gasoline and oil order will disappear from clothes if you place the clothes in a garbage bag with baking soda for a few days before washing them.
  • Clean the bristles of your toothbrush by placing them in baking soda and warm water overnight.
  • Adding baking soda to your bath water will relieve sunburned and itchy skin.
  • A paste of baking soda and water applied to a burn or insect bite will offer some relief.
  • You can clean your fridge with one teaspoon of baking soda to one quart of warm water.
  • Open up clogged drains by pouring a cup of baking soda into the opening and then add one cup of hot vinegar. After a few minutes flush the drain with boiling water.
  • You can add a pinch o faking soda to boiled syrup to prevent it from crystallizing.
  • Wash your fresh fruits and vegetable in a large bowl of cool water and 2 or 3 tablespoons of baking soda in order to remove pesticides, dirt and or wax.
  • Make a thick paste of baking soda and water and rub paste into perspiration stains. Let stand for an hour and then launder as usual (should help get the stain out).
